Carnegie Gallery Long Exposure – Canada’s 150th Double Exposure Exhibit

As Many of you know this year is the celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary and I was selected to be part of the event called – Double Exposure: Celebrating Canada’s 150th through images of Dundas. This even is a multi-site, group exhibition, where I will be part of a larger, National celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial. The exhibition will take place from the end of June until the end of July, 2017 in three Dundas venues: The Dundas Museum and Archives, the Carnegie Gallery and the Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA). The exhibition will be open to the public with free admission. Based on the partners’ Winterblooms program, which attracts over 2000 visitors in a 4 day period, we anticipate Double Exposure will attract significantly greater numbers over the course of the month-long exhibition. The exhibit is on now for about 2 months so make sure to check out the Dundas Valley School of Art and the Carnegie Gallery to see what each artist has produced. Also, if you like the image it is framed and for sale so check it out. If you would like another image just send me a message and I can take care of […]

Double Exposure – Canada’s 150th Anniversary

Some exciting news. This year is the celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary and I was selected to be part of the event called – Double Exposure: Celebrating Canada’s 150th through images of Dundas. Each artists is asked to pick one image from the Dundas Museum’s online archive and then produce their own piece of that same image. Pieces can be anything from a literal re-shoot of the image to a flight of fancy that plays on the original but re-interprets it in new ways. To this end, pieces don’t need to be photographs but must incorporate photography in their creation. I […]

My Name is Matthew Schonewille and welcome to my Kickstarter page. I am a professional photographer located in Southern Ontario; I am passionate about sharing the beautiful world around me through photography. For the past 5 years I have been focused on shooting weddings where I captured over 130 weddings and took over 700,000 images. I loved my clients but I was rather limited to spread my creative wings. Now I – “Plan, Shoot and Share” my photos with thousands of people, while teaching other professionals about what it means to be a successful artist in their business.   WHY THE CITIES AT NIGHT PROJECT? I am now transitioning […]

Prince of Wales Hotel Beauty

As many of you know, the Prince of Wales Hotels is a stunning hotel located in Niagara On The Lake. It is part of the 3 vintage hotels in the area and is a landmark of beauty and elegance. When I was shooting weddings I had many opportunities to see the hotel at night which really inspired me to go back and capture what you now see. The night I went out it had just finished raining and was a beautiful 15 degrees out. A nice warm spring night with absolutely no one in sight: Amazing!  I was planning on shooting a variety of locations in NOTL and the Prince of Wales was my final stop. The image I captured is unique because of the reflection in the water. I can come back any night and get the same shot of the hotel at the same angle but I won’t be able to get the same water/reflection.     This photo was captured as a long exposure over 33 seconds with my camera on the ground being proper up by my battery grip. You might be wondering why no tripod, well I did have one but it was too high […]

A Passion for the Milky Way

In this tutorial I am going to show you how to process a milky way photo from camera raw to the final processed image. Here is the before and after of the milky way and you can see that there is a dramatic and pretty amazing transformation from the camera raw version to the final image. Now shooting in Raw means that all of the colour adjustments and processing I did to the image was quite easy and did not take away the quality of the image. Now in contrast, if I shot this image as a jpeg, I would not have the same freedom and layers of information to work with.   You always want to shoot in Raw if you are going to process your images. With that being said, let’s get started and hopefully inspire some of you to have some fun and really take your images to the next level. The first step I took was in the Lens Corrections panel and I enabled the Lens Profile correction for my specific lens. I did this because each lens has it’s own unique distortions and by enabling this profile I was able to start to minimize any […]

Moloa’a Bay

“Moloa’a Bay” is a location on the northeast side of the Island of Kauai in Hawaii. It is most commonly known as the first filming location for the hit show, Gilligan’s Island. This is the beach where Gilligan’s ship was shipwrecked in the first few episodes. The technique used to capture this image is a panoramic composed of over 30 images that were stitched together to achieve a high-resolution image with great detail. The vibrant colours in the sand and water are a result of the bright sun over the bay that acts as a spotlight and reflects off of the sand crystals.

The Queens Bath

“Queen’s Bath” was taken at a location entitled Queen’s Bath located in Princeville, Kauai. The location is known as a place that should not be taken lightly as 27 people have died due to the ocean conditions. The large area is called Queen’s Bath because among the long stretch of lava rocks a natural formation of a bathtub was formed where people can bathe at low tide. This image was captured with a shutter speed of 1/8000 to freeze the water that had just crested over the rocks. The picture was taken late in the afternoon so that the sun was behind to get the best lighting.

About Matthew
I am extremely driven as an artist to help other artists learn how to be successful and sustainable with producing their work because I have experienced first hand how important it is to understand the business side of what we do. Too many artists consider themselves "starving artists" and that is a sad reality I am looking to change.
